Christian evangelical leader, Pat Robertson, has made yet another public gaffe, which has sparked criticism from just about everyone. In a recent taping of the 700 Club, which Robertson claims over 1 million Americans tune into on a daily basis, he stated that "Islam was not a religion of peace" and that he wasn't going mince words anymore, stating that he believed Muslims, and the religion of Islam, are bent on world domination.
Something to note here, before you jump to conclusions, and no doubt, decide to crucify the man(Robertson, not Jesus), Robertson has been in and out of the news here for the last few months, doing more in line with retracting public statements, as opposed to spreading the gospel. He is a liability, publicly, and the 700 Club's PR department is probably getting the work-out of it's life. He's an old man, set in his ways, not unlike the old bastard that sits on the porch in your neighbourhood. The only difference is that this man was, and continues to be instrumental in shaping American Christian values, and has a fellowship unlike most other leaders simply because of his time in the ring. I'm curious to hear what Billy Graham thinks of his ramblings and opinions. I don't fault Robertson for stating what he feels is the truth, mostly because I think he's ceased to understand, or maybe never did understand, the power of media and it's effect. This is the same man who criticizes violence in video games, and the portrayal of misogynistic and nefarious character in everything from film and television to music, yet publicly says irresponisble and uninformed things in as public a medium as it gets, at a time when sensitivity to the issues and the current state of world affairs is one of the most important things we need to do as a society. Robertson's comments, and apparent dedication to being a shit disturber, is making that effort all the more difficult.
The guy is probably senile, so my question is posed to the network, and furthermore, to the producers of the 700 club. Even with all of Pat Robertson's nonsense, some executive up in there must understand that with all of the apologies, attempts at clearing up, retractions, and bad press that the man is getting, they are hurting themselves. It's overwhelming! This can't be good for the show, and for that matter, for the man himself. He is becoming a parody. Take the sick man off the air, and keep him at home with his family.
